Will my medication give me cancer?
Starting a new medication can be intimidating. You may have questions about possible side effects. Some medications have increased risk of certain types of cancers. Those risks are listed as side effects, but the actual risk is very low. According to a 2016 study, the use of biologics does not seem to increase the overall cancer risk. There is an increased risk of cancer with use of thiopurine medications (such as azathioprine or 6-mercaptopurine) and with chronic inflammation associated with IBD.
