What is the impact of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) on pelvic floor dysfunction?
IBD and pelvic floor dysfunction can occur at the same time, or IBD can contribute to pelvic floor problems. Symptoms such as chronic constipation or diarrhea can cause pelvic floor issues such as lack of coordination between muscles (making it difficult to have a bowel movement) or bowel incontinence. Surgeries, fistulas, or abscesses can also contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction. If you have concerns about your pelvic floor or are experiencing pelvic floor pain, speak with your doctor about possible treatments (including getting a referral to a physical therapist that specializes in pelvic floor disorders).
