What is a transabdominal ultrasound and what it is measuring?

An ultrasound uses high-energy sound waves to create a picture of inside your abdomen. A transabdominal ultrasound can show intestinal wall thickness, areas of inflammation, and potential complications such as fistula or abscesses. Your doctor may order a transabdominal ultrasound to diagnose suspected IBD, monitor your IBD, or determine reasons for abdominal pain or unexplained bleeding.
