What is a Hemoglobin test and why did my doctor order it?

Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around your body. The test measures the amount of hemoglobin in your red blood cells. Your doctor may have ordered a hemoglobin test if they are concerned about GI bleeding, iron deficiency, or symptoms that suggest anemia such as fatigue or shortness of breath.
